Online – An Overview of the German Research System

Target group

Doctoral candidates and postdocs who are not yet familiar with the German Research System

 

Content

If you start to work in a German research institute or German university, you will soon encounter laws, regulations, and words that are not known in other countries or have a different meaning. This event will shed light on some of these concepts and terms.

Starting with an introduction to the German research system and career paths within German academia, we will discuss the meaning and implication of some concepts, such as:

  • Juniorprofessor*in
  • Tenure track-Professor*in
  • Habilitation
  • Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz
  • Akademischer Mittelbau
  • Beamte*r

 

On top of that, you will understand what the structure of the German academic system means for your individual situation, your career, and for your colleagues, including supervisors, directors, and admin workers.

 

Aims

After this seminar, you will understand...

  • how the German Research System is structured.
  • what steps you need to take if you want to pursue a career in German Academia.
  • what risks are involved in the German career path and what you can gain if you choose this career path.
