Data Analysis and Statistics using R and RStudio

Target group

The target group includes doctoral and postdoctoral researchers working on empirical research projects or planning to do so, who need to analyze data statistically. No prior programming experience is required. It will be an applied course making use of the Statistics Program R and the development suite RStudio.

Aims

The aim of this online workshop is to provide an up-to-date practical approach to data analysis techniques and statistics. The focus will be on direct applications and examples. Doctoral candidates will be able to adapt the concepts to their own research projects.

Topics

  • Use R and RStudio to solve statistical problems
  • Create and handle vectors and data frames
  • Import and export csv files
  • Understand why packages are helpful
  • Visualize data (plots)
  • Describe your data using statistics
  • Enhance R-programming efficiency

Procedure

The workshop will begin with an introduction to R and RStudio. We will work on practical examples in the statistics program RStudio to visualize and analyze the data. Basic programming steps will be explained before we will process the data and discuss statistical methods. Based on the needs and presentations of the participants, individual topics can be addressed.

Requirements

Participants are required to give a short presentation of their research project and how they intend to use R (max. 3 minutes). You need to have your own laptop for the workshop and have R and RStudio preinstalled. If you have problems installing R or RStudio, please contact  in advance for assistance.
