The Program

For whom is AdvanceMent Freiburg?

AdvanceMent Freiburg offers structured further qualification for postdocs and advanced doctoral candidates in three program lines and two program languages:

How is AdvanceMent Freiburg structured?

The mentoring program consists of five main elements:


AdvanceMent Freiburg offers the classic one-to-one-mentoring between mentee and mentor (also called tandem) in all program lines. We are jointly looking for (professionally) experienced mentors from various fields who will advise the mentees with their personal experience on professional steps to take.

The mentoring partnership begins after matching and is limited to the duration of the program. At the end of the program period, the mentoring relationship is dissolved and can optionally be continued on a personal level upon personal agreement.

The program lines @academia and @newpathways are further divided into smaller peer groups based on professional goals and areas of expertise. The peer group meets in a self-organized manner approximately every 4-6 weeks over the course of the program to network and support each other. Each peer group determines its own working methods, topics, and goals.

The mentoring is supplemented by a mandatory supporting program. In addition, the AdvanceMent Freiburg guidelines provide support in shaping the mentoring relationship.


An integral part of all program lines is a specific offer on consulting and workshops. Depending on the target group and program line, AdvanceMent offers workshops on career planning, (science) communication and (self-) presentation, conflict management and mental health. In the @academia and @newpathways program lines, 5 of 7 workshops offered must be attended to earn a certificate. The @flexability program line offers a fixed program of 4 workshops per year, which must be attended over a period of 12 months. Optionally, missed workshops can be made up in this line. Furthermore, workshops from the FRS qualification program for doctoral candidates and workshops from the GDaPE qualification program for postdocs can be attended if personally relevant (on topics such as time, project or conflict management, communication, publishing, etc.). Workshops from the qualification programs attended during the program can be included in the mentoring certificate.

Process support

Mentoring is supported by events that accompany the process. These include the following events:

  • introductory workshop
  • ceremonial kick-off event
  • mid-term review workshop
  • final review workshop
  • ceremonial closing event with awarding of certificates


Mentees benefit from a wide range of counseling services that are available in addition to mentoring to assist with orientation, decision-making, and skills development. These include:

  • accompanying advice from the program management
  • peer counseling within the peer groups
  • individual consulting services with coaches in the context of career planning workshops
  • possibility to participate in coaching offers (postdocs) of GDaPE  as well as in coaching and consulting offers (doctoral candidates) of FRS.


The program promotes networking between mentees and with other professionals within and outside the university through network meetings, informative events, and expert discussions with speakers from academia and business (e.g. career lounge, biography talk).

How long will the program last?

All program lines have a duration of 12 months. The program lines @academia and @newpathways start with the introductory workshop and end with the certificate award. The @flexability program line offers flexible entry in the current year and ends after 12 months. The matching phase can last for different lengths of time, which also results in mentoring relationships of different lengths (on average about 10 months).

Participation in the events accompanying the process, in the qualification workshops and in the final evaluation for the further development of the program is mandatory for mentees.
